Hydrogen
fuel may be produces from renewable sources and produces little
or no pollution; it has the potential to be a major transportation
fuel in the future. Unfortunately, the energy requirements and/or
costs of these hydrogen production systems have discouraged large
scale use up to the present. For this situation to change it is
important that we find inexpensive sources of electricity to split
the water that covers our planet. Hopefully this electricity will
be developed from renewable energy sources such as wind farms or
photovoltaic arrays. One promising approach is to use hydrogen to
produce electricity via fuel cells (see Energy
Storage).
